As many of you may remember, in April 2002 the IRS lost many of the tax checks sent to Pittsburgh, PA. The IRS discovered that the employees at the bank that were processing these checks had thrown them away. Many clients were affected and had to send a duplicate check and request the waiver of any interest and penalties. The IRS is now sending out request for documentation backing this in order to pursue taking action against the bank that had destroyed the checks. They are requesting that you send any backup that you have to them on the original checks. There is a threat of subpoenaing the documents if not provided to them. If you receive such correspondence, you should contact your tax partner.
