Physician Final Rule Update

April 24, 2012- The ultimate fate of the Sustainable Growth Rate formula has again been tabled by Congress. In December 2011 Congress passed legislation to extend the payment cut override through February 2012. Further, Congress then passed legislation to extend the override through December 31, 2012. Despite recommendation from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) to repeal the SGR system and replace it with a permanent correction to the payment system, Congress has merely charged the Government Accountability Office and Health and Human Services to provide feedback for the development of a long-term solution to the Medicare physician payment system.
