IRS Delays Filing of Form 990 for Certain Tax-Exempt Hospitals (Form year 2010)

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has made revisions to the 2010 Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax Forms 990 and 990-EZ, instructions, and schedules from the prior year’s form. The IRS has changed the 2010 Schedule H- Hospital and is delaying the filing for the 2010 Schedule H of the Form 990. The revisions impact tax-exempt organizations that operate one or more hospital facilities and that would otherwise be required to file Form 990. The IRS announcement grants an automatic 3 month extension of time to file Form 990 for 2010 and directs these hospital organizations not to file the 2010 Form 990 (with Schedule H attached) before July 1, 2011. Currently this would only affect Hospital's with a 12/31/10 year-end; Hospitals with a 9/30 /10 year-end must file the 2009 Form 990.
